This event is located in the middle of Yamhill wine country. Since we are coming from Vancouver, WA, and over an hours drive, we are calling it a destination race. This year is their 5th year and they are trying to make it the best one yet with several weekend events. I ran their inaugural in 2010, and again in 2012. So far I am on track to do this race every odd year lol. Held on Labor Day weekend, my husband and I have gotten a babysitter and we have made reservations at the R&R Carlton B&B, to enjoy as much of the weekend experience provided by the race as we can. The B&B is just blocks from the finish line (allowing me to take the race morning shuttle and letting him sleep in and meet me at the finish line later).
The whole weekend is packed with goodies. Although we are unable to get a sitter that long, the events start Friday August 29th at 5pm with a ‘Welcome Reception Evening at Carlton Firehouse Tasting Room’ this event is $40. On Saturday, August 30, 2014, at 9am for $40, you can join in on morning yoga in the Vineyards in the Stoller Family Estate Winery. Saturday we are heading in and enjoying the expo at the Evergreen Aviation Museum and Waterpark in McMinnville.
The expo goes from 10a to 6pm. Meet exhibitors and race sponsors, pick up your packet. Shop for exclusive Wine Country Half Marathon apparel and gifts at their merchandise section. Learn about the course and developing a race day strategy at the Race Orientation Seminar or attend one of the other seminars and discussions they will be having throughtout the day. Give yourself plenty of time to visit the museum or waterpark, or even the IMAX theater. There will also be wine tasting from three local wineries from 1-3pm. But that’s not all! Playworks will also be having a fun run and they will be offering two fun runs, with a shorter and longer distance designed for all ages! Click here to learn more!
Saturday night is date night! We are attending the Pre-Race Dinner at Anne Amie Vineyards ($65pp) at 6pm. Breathtaking views and fabulous Pinots (Noir, Gris and Blanc!) will be served from Anne Amie Vineyards ( the vineyard is located along the course route). The wines will be paired with a Farm to Table menu featuring pasta and protein prepared with locally sourced ingredients perfectly suited for your pre-race regime. If you order early, there is also a gluten free menu available.
I have to be careful not to drink too much, because Sunday, August 31st, is race day! The race starts bright and early at 7a and the post-race Wine & Music Festival starts at 930a. With more than 20 wineries, there is surely something you will enjoy. There will be live music, a Photo backdrop, and booths that non wine drinkers will enjoy too (previous years had energy bars, sports drinks, and chocolates to name a few). Because I love my hubby, He also gets to enjoy the festival with a wine glass of his own. They are $30 each. (See the winery listing below).
After the race, you have the opportunity to take the Yamhill Winery Tour, which departs from downtown Carlton at 2pm and lasts until 6pm. they will stop at 3 wineries (TBA later) that will provide light snacks the price of $30pp includes tasting fees, transportation and the light food.
