Tri4Kids Youth Triathlon offers kiddos fun chance to swim, run and bike in Salem

Tri4Kids PartnersToday we're featuring a few posts just for the kids. It's about mid-way through summer break and I know from personal experience that summer can get BOR-ING. But, keep the kids active and you'll help them develop a lifelong love of fitness. Our first post of the day is about the Tri4 Kids Youth Triathlon scheduled for Sunday, August 23, 2014 in Salem. Kids age 6-12 are invited to participate in one of two courses. The short course starts with a 50-yard swim, a 1.5 mile bike ride, and a 1/2 mile run. The long course is a 100-yard swim, a 3 mile bike ride, and a 1.5 mile run. Kids of all fitness levels are invited to participate!

The Tri4Kids is put on by the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, Courthouse Fitness, Salem Health, and Salem Electric. The West Salem Courthouse Fitness Club is the venue for this third running of Tri4Kids, and their outdoor pool is where athletes will start their race. They’ll then head onto a pedestrian-only course in Wallace Marine Park, well marked and manned by volunteers. The bike is also on a very safe route through Riverfront Park and over the pedestrian bridge. At the finish, the kids will even get to run through a big arch like “real” triathletes.

Get them excited by attending a local triathlon – or volunteering. The Series 33 Olympic and Sprint Triathlon in West Linn on August 17 would be a great option. Or you could get your young athlete motivated by watching videos of triathlons online. The Ironman site has many videos posted right on their live coverage page here, and you can often find inspiring stories of people who have gone through significant weight loss or learned to swim, bike and run after losing a limb, which might really get older kids thinking about what they’re capable of … a lot!

About Kelly Barten (1152 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
