Oh my gosh. AA Sports Mid-Summer triathlon and duathlon is right around the corner. I’m sweating bullets just thinking about it. Why? Because I am registered for the Tri-iT-Novice, and this will be my first rodeo (triathlon) ever. What am I getting myself into?!

Registration is open for the 30th annual Mid-Summer Triathlon and Duathlon, by AA Sports. This incredible combination of events, which is also the Tri Northwest Sprint Distance Championship event for 2014, will be held near Portland, Oregon (at Blue Lake Park) on Sunday, August 3, 2014.

Participants can choose from the Sprint triathlon (.5 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run), Olympic triathlon (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run), a Sprint duathlon (5k run, 12 mile bike, 5k run) or the Tri-iT-Novice (.25 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run). I’ll be taking to the start line for the Tri-iT-Novice this year. Race fees are $90 for all events until 7/21. Team rates are $45 per person until 7/21. TRI NorthWest members deduct $10 from registration, and must supply proof at packet pick-up. Entry fees raise $5 for registration during 7/22-7/31. Another $5 increase will occur for registrations from 8/1-packet pick-up. Your registration fee includes a finisher medal (doesn’t it look just gorgeous?), technical event shirt (if registered prior to 7/22), Hawaiian party with live music, post-race food, Deschutes Brewery beer garden, prizes, ChampionChip timing, and lots of fun! Parking at Blue Lake Park is $5, so consider car pooling. Leave your dog at home; no dogs allowed at Blue Lake Park. Same day packet pick-up available from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

What I really love about this race, and why I selected it to be my inaugural triathlon, is because the water temperatures are historically in the 70s, the semi-closed-to-traffic bike course, the flat and fast run, and the Hawaiian theme that is going to be evident at the start and finish. It’s going to be a huge Hawaiian party! Awesome! Also, I have heard nothing but positive accolades for all of the AA Sports triathlon events.

For the details of the course, please check out this excellent detailed course map. This shows your swim entry and exit, bike transition points, bike start and finish, and the run start and finish location.

Get registered for this awesome race and party, and I’ll see you there!
