Race Preview: Barrel to Keg Relay/Ultra – July 12, 2014
The 69-mile course is a scenic point-to-point, starting at the Harris Bridge Vineyard in Philomath, Oregon, journeying along rural portions of the Oregon Coast Range, over the Yaquina Bay Bridge (if you’ve been to Newport, you know the one– it’s one of the most recognizable Highway 101 bridges) and finishing at the famous Rogue Ales Bayfront Brewery on Newport’s South Beach Marina among (hopefully) barking seals, tuna boats, and crab catchers.
I ran my first relay just last month, and after never really being interested in relays before I’ll admit my ears pique now when I hear about reasonable, one-day relays. As for this relay’s 69 miles, runners can pick their poison on the 69 mile course and join the fray as an ultra individual, in a team of two (~34.5 miles/person), three (~23 miles/person), four (~17.5 miles/person), all the way up to seven people (~9.85 miles/person).
Fear not, walkers– you’re not left out, but your route is a little shorter. Teams of two to seven walkers can cover the 7 legs of the abbreviated 31 mile course. Proceeds from the race benefit Community Services Consortium, a public nonprofit organization fighting poverty in Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties for over 30 years.
