A whole slew of Summer Solstice races

My, my, my. There are SO may races the weekend of June 20-22, 2014. It's not only a beautiful time of year in Oregon, but this year, the Summer Solstice falls on a Saturday, so races that might normally be on a weeknight are weighing down the weekend race calendar. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, so any race that falls in the evening is one we're counting as a "Solstice" event, even if that word isn't in the race name! To help you decode which of those races are actual Summer Solstice races - maybe they'll be sacrificing a newbie 5k runner? - here's a "run"-down of Run Oregon's favorite Summer Solstice races, alphabetically by city: NOTE: The Portland and Salem races are on FRIDAY, Oregon City, Springfield, Tigard, and Vancouver races are on SATURDAY, and the Beaverton race is on SUNDAY. These are all evening events. (and if you're running a morning event, consider volunteering for one of these!)

The course is two loops around the campus (all on road with minimal inclines = fast), followed by an awards ceremony and raffle. All participants get a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, with proceeds benefiting one of Run Oregon’s favorite non-profits, the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund – learn more about it in our interview with founder Julius Achon.

When: Sunday, June 22, 2014

And yes, the course will be lit up with glow sticks – making for a fun, festive race for a good cause – the ASE Foundation.

ORRC Summer Solstice Sundowner 5k (and kids run) in Oregon City

ORRC’s annual Summer Solstice Sundowner 5k is run on the Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. This evening race is a great mix of road (the service road around campus), asphalt path, dirt trail, and wood chip trail … with a little grass thrown in for good measure. Part of the ORRC 5k Series, this race always gets a good turnout and even though it’s on what is apparently “The most popular day to have a race” in Oregon, I expect this year to be no exception. Typically, this race gets a good draw even when it’s on a weekday. Maybe it’s the post-race Popsicles that every finisher gets … or the five-deep age group ribbons … either way – it’s a great race.

When: Saturday, June 21, 2014
What time: The kid’s run is a 7p and the 5k starts at 7:15p
Where: Randall Hall Gymnasium Parking Lot, Clackamas Community College (after you turn in off highway 213, take a right and circle around to the tennis courts, look for the tents set up)
Register: Online by 6/18 for $15 for non-ORRC members and $10 for members; DOR is $20 either way.

Summer Solstice Urban Obstacle Race in Vancouver, Wash.

This run is part Amazing Race, part First Thursday as teams of up to four participants (but you can do it solo) zip around “downtown and uptown” Vancouver solving clues and racing to checkpoints. Each checkpoint gives you raffle tickets, so the more you run, the more chances you’ll have to win. Participants will have a full two hours to get to as many locations as they want, with assistance from the “interwebs” and even one free pass to get directions from one checkpoint to the next.

When: Saturday, June 21, 2014
What time: 5p

Register: Online by June 20 for $40 or DOR for $50

About Kelly Barten (1152 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
