June 21 must be the most popular day to run a race. I almost think we should declare it "Oregon race day" and try to get all runners and walkers to sign up for a local event! If you're near Elkton on that day, may we suggest the John Bradley Butterfly Run? Formerly called the "Elkton Butterfly Run," this year the name of the race has changed to honor the memory of John Bradley, who founded the run. Events include a free kid's run, a 5k walk, a 5k run and a 10k run; there are also non-running activities going on around the Blooms & Butterflies Celebration including craft booths, live music, a book sale, and lots for the kids to do. There's even a BBQ dinner at Fort Umpqua.

Here are the vitals:

When: Saturday, June 21, 2014

What time: There is a free kid’s race at 8:30a, and the 5k/10k events start at 9a.

Where: The Eklton Community Education Center at 15850 Highway 38 W in Elkton, Ore.

Register: Online here or you can view, download and print the paper registration form here. You can also register DOR starting at 8a. Register ahead of time for $20 or DOR for $25.

All participants are eligible for door prize drawings and there are also awards for the top finishers.

The course description makes it sound like a beautiful run – running on the Riverwalk Trail, crossing Elk Creek and the Umpqua River. Please note that the 5k is listed as a “fun run” while the 10k is listed as “competitive” – this doesn’t mean you need to be super fast, just so you know what sort of atmosphere each distance will have at the starting line. And yes, you can be competitive with yourself!

About Kelly Barten (1152 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
