Small race preview: Smith Rock Ascent Races

SmithRock_LogoThere are two days to the upcoming Smith Rock Ascent Races, put on by local race organizers Renee Seker, Todd Janssen, and Trevor Hostetler. This is the inaugural running of the road races and the trail 4-Miler Smith Rock Ascent, offering 50k, 15-mile, 4-mile and kid's trail races on Saturday, June 14 and a road half marathon and 10k on Sunday, June 15. And as a special deal - there's a code for the road races on Sunday - use "RunSmithRock" to save 20% when you register online by June 12th. That brings the half to $40 and the 10k to $32.  Good reason to go to Bend for Father's Day, right?

If you run both the 50k trail run on Saturday and the half marathon road race on Sunday, you get a “Double Shot” shirt and coffee from event sponsors Fleet Feet Bend and Oblique.

Trail Races

When: Saturday, June 14, 2014

What time: The 4-Miler is first at 7:45a, then the 50k will start at 8a, followed by the 15-Miler at 9a. The free kid’s run is at 10:30a. Kids can participate whether or not a parent is running one of the “grown-up” races.

Where: Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne, Ore.

Register: Online by 6/12 for the 50k for $85, the 15-miler for $65, and the 4-Miler for $35. The Kids Race is free.

The 50k includes about 4,500′ of elevation gain, so don’t say we didn’t tell you. 3/4 of the course is single track, with a lollipop layout so you’ll get to see some participants on your way back in if you’re speedy enough. The 15-Miler also includes a lot of climbing: about 3,000′.  And the 4-Miler doesn’t leave you running flat, either. That’s just not their style. The kids race is also on trail and includes a finisher medal for all kids that complete the 1/2 mile distance.

There are aid stations on the trail and there will be a post-race BBQ. Pick-up your packet on Friday night from 4-6p at Fleet Feet Bend or DOR starting at 6:30a.

Road Races

When: Sunday, June 14, 2014

What time: The 10k and Half start together at 7:05a

Where: Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne, Ore.

Register: Online by 6/12 for the Half for $50 or the 10k for $40. Use code “RunSmithRock” and save 20%.

“Minimal elevation gain” is in the course description for the road races – since it’s not on trail, organizers figured you’d want to go fast, right?

You can pick up your packet for the road races during the Friday night pick-up at Fleet Feet Bend, or DOR starting at 6a.

You can camp out at Smith Rock State Park – click here for details. Otherwise note there is a $5 parking fee at the park.

About Kelly Barten (1152 Articles)
I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
