Race Preview: Inaugural Red, White, and Blues 5K/10K Run and Walk

So, what are you doing Sunday July 6, 2014? Seems like a ways away, but it’s really not. Time to start planning! I am gearing up to run the new Red, White and Blues 10K, organized by the Better Series (the Hood to Coast people). There's also a 5K option, but I'm running the 10K just because. This event combines some of my very favorite things: Running in Portland, running along the Tom McCall Waterfront, the colors red, white and blue AND Blues music. Indeed, finishers of either the 5K or 10K Red White and Blues event are part of the Waterfront Blues Festival.

The course includes crossing two Portland bridges (Morrison and Hawthorne) and what’s more is that $10 from each registration will benefit the Oregon Food Bank. And, course organizers assure us that the course is flat and fast. I like that in a race. The quicker I can get to the world class blues music the better! 10K participants will make two loops of the 5K course.

What is really exciting about these two events combining is that the Waterfront Blues Festival has annually been recognized as one of the top music festivals in the world and is the largest fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank.

Registration for the inaugural Red, White, and Blues 5K Run/Walk is $39 and the 10K Run/Walk is $49. You may register on race day, however you will incur an additional premium fee and organizers will not guarantee any specific race shirt/sizes. The event is Sunday, July 6, 2014 with a 7:30AM start time.

Event details:

Registration: Online and on race day, $39 for the 5K, $49 for the 10K, late registration available but will cost more

Location: Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland

When:  Sunday July 6, 2014

What time: 7:30a

  1. The 5k “loop” actually includes a couple of out-and-back stretches. Not sure it is interesting enough to run twice for the 10k. And the blues festival doesn’t start until noon. Lot of great runs on the July 4 weekend (including one Sunday morning in Tigard), but I’m not sure this is one of them.

Thank you for your feedback! Keep it coming, there certainly isn’t a one size fits all race, there’s truly something for everyone in the greater Portland area.
