Preview: First Responder 5k on June 1 in Tigard

First-Responder-5kThe First Responder 5k is a benefit to raise funds for the local chapter of the American Red Cross, running (and walking) on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Organizer Scott Rosendahl, who works full time for ServPro of Tigard/Tualatin,  says the reason they’re holding the event is to “help our community learn about Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Awareness, while celebrating the work our Hero First Responders do week in and week out.”

Runners and walkers are both invited, and participants with strollers and with well-behaved dogs on leashes are all invited. Kids age 16 and younger are invited to participate for no charge at this very family-friendly event. The goal is to get as many people out there as possible for this very worthy cause and to support First Responders.

The course is listed below the vitals, so read on …

When: Sunday, June 1, 2014

What time: There is an Awareness Fair with information on how to prepare for an emergency or disaster that opens at 11a. The race starts at noon.

Where: Cook Park in Tigard

Register: Online here for $35 by May 31 and get a long-sleeve shirt; or DOR starting at 11a at Cook Park shelter #2.

The course starts out at Cook Park near the big play area and parking lots, heading west towards the baseball fields and then joining the trail that runs along the Tualatin River. The course goes past the butterfly garden and along the open field, taking a right onto the trail that leads to the Tualatin Community Park.

The first mile marker is near the bridge crossing over the river, and the route continues on the paved trail. Runners and walkers will loop around the play field and dog park and then hop on the dirt trail that runs right next to the river to head back north. The dirt trail rejoins the paved trail immediately before the bridge, which you’ll head back over and continue north into Durham City Park. Mile two is on your way around a small loop before you head back towards Cook Park. Mile three is near the butterfly garden, with a short 0.1 back to the finish.

This event is sponsored by ServPro of Tigard/Tualatin and Liberty Mutual Insurance.

We started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. We also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support local race organizers.
