Race Preview: Race Against Child Abuse in St. Helens

A race with to support a cause that is dear to my heart is taking place in St. Helens on June 7. The 2014 Race Against Child Abuse features a half marathon, 10k, and 5k. Before I get into any race related stuff, I want to feature the cause first. In my “real life” job this is a program that I am familiar with and I know does great work. All proceeds from the race directly benefit the Amani Center. Here is a description:

The Center is a non-profit organization created to assist Columbia County in responding to child abuse through the child forensic interviewing and medical assessment, treatment of children (birth – 18 years) alleged to have been sexually abused, physically abused, emotionally abused, neglected and/or witnessed a violent crime including domestic violence. The Amani Center’s mission is to “minimize trauma to child abuse victims through professional medical diagnosis and treatment in a secure and child-friendly environment with the goal of preventing child abuse in all forms.

On to the race information. The races will be a great combination of country and city running, but will stay on hard asphalt and packed gravel the entire time. The race courses look simple, but will definitely present a challenge. The half will feature almost 2,200 feet of total elevation gain. But with major climbs come major views, and some great ones are expected here.
