Race Preview: 2014 Silverton Health Fun Run (5k) on May 10

2014-fun-run-logo-sneakerSorry for the short notice, but the 31st running of the Silverton Hospital Fun Run is back again on May 10. The 5k was started in 1983 by local physician Michael Grady, MD, and has been fully embraced by the community, and those from surrounding cities. While it has a small town feel to it, the race typically attracts somewhere around 600 runners each year.

2014-fun-run-race-mapThe out-and-back route follows the same as in year’s past. The course starts in front of Silverton Hospital Family Birth Center and snakes down some neighborhood streets before entering Coolidge-McClain Park. After crossing a narrow bridge, runners will head South on Water Street away from town (towards Silver Creek Falls State Park for those familiar), before returning to the finish. There is an uphill finish to the end – which is always joyous. But hey, at least there’s a hospital nearby if you get too tired!

There will be complimentary snacks from 7:30 – 10:00 am and a kids 1-mile run shortly thereafter. This was one of the first races I ever did when I got into running, and it holds a special place in my heart.
