Although I have had mixed feelings about single-sex events in the past, Hippie Chick is indeed an all women’s event designed to celebrate women (hence the Mother’s Day Weekend timing). The race is open to runners and walkers, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, girlfriends, and best friends of all stripes. The race begins at the Gordon Faber Recreational Complex in Hillsboro and runs through scenic Washington County, Oregon on flat, tree-lined streets with pastoral views (i.e., this is NOT an urban race by any stretch of the imagination. There is a 50% chance of cows.).
As a car-free person, I love to see lots of packet pickup days– the closer to me or the more accessible by public transit the better. For this race, there are two days of packet pickup– Thursday, May 8th from 10:00am-8:00pm at Portland Running Company, 800 SE Grand, Portland, Oregon 97214 and Friday, May 9th from 10:00am-6:00pm at Portland Running Company, 10029 SW Nimbus Ave., Suite 100, Beaverton, Oregon 97008. Thankfully, the Thursday packet pickup is just over the Morrison Bridge from where I work in downtown Portland– a perfect lunchtime errand with a little shopping treat thrown in.
If you live in the Beaverton area or are looking for a women’s group run, there are actually free Hippie Chick Training runs that you can join every Thursday night at 6:00 PM starting from Portland Running Co. (address above).
In case you want to see the course itself, click here. The Better Series– the host of the Hippie Chick– put together a nice satellite map that gives you a good idea of the somewhat rural course (and a clue that maybe you should bring a friend or five or– at a minimum– your mP3 player). Don’t have anyone to run with? Fear not. There will be pace groups to keep you company and on pace, brought to you by Team Athena. Here’s the overall race day schedule:
DAY OF RACE SCHEDULE
6 – 7:30 AM: Arrive at stadium, park at Intel or Stadium (follow police instruction)
6:30 AM: Secure Bag Check opens
7:30 AM– Kids’ Race Start (kids’ race is free w/o t-shirt, $15 w/t-shirt)
8:00 AM– Half and Quarter Marathon Start. Line up on SW 229th at balloon arch; line up by pace, fastest in front and slowest in back. No strollers allowed.
9 AM -12 PM– Pancake breakfast, beer and mimosa garden and live music! Beer and mimosa garden is cash only; you must have your ID (honestly, this is kind of a shame– one drink should be included when you’re paying either $100 or $110 for the Quarter or Half Marathon respectively).
11:00 AM– Awards Ceremony (plaques to age group winners and hanging flower baskets to overall)
Ready to sign up? Click here, and register today with code PEACE to get $20 off the quarter or half marathon anytime before May 3, 2014.
