waters-edge-half-marathon-trailIf you haven’t heard of Breakaway Promotions, then it’s about time you hear about them. This company has partnered up with some great races in the Columbia Gorge, both cycling and road running events. The Water’s Edge Half Marathon, held on May 3 in The Dalles,  is one of their first half marathons of the year, and features a 10k and duathlon as well.

breakaway-promotions-triple-crown-seriesThe race is part of the 2014 Gorge Half Marathon Triple Crown Series (along with the Bridge of the Gods Half in August and the Columbia Gorge Marathon & Half in October). These three half marathon events, in three different seasons, at three different locations in the Columbia River Gorge really make it a fantastic series! There will be special recognition and a special prize for those who participate in all three.

In checking out a course map of the half marathon, it appears pretty flat and gorgeous as it goes along the Columbia River. The run starts at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and runners will head east along the Riverfront Trail winding through grasslands and along the banks of the Columbia River.  The course will be primarily on closed paths and paved  trails  There will be aid stations and port-a-potties every 2 miles along the course.

The 10k course will also start at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and follow primarily the same start as the half marathon. There will be a decline over the first few miles, followed by an incline near the end.

The duathlon course is primarily flat, with one climb and decline right in the middle between miles 5 and 13.  The first out-and-back run starts alongside the banks of the Columbia River and winds through fields of wildflowers and green pastures.  The bike portion will be a westward jaunt out on the Old Scenic Gorge Highway. The incline will be the climb beginning right around Mayer State Park.

The race is partnered up with the Water’s Edge Fitness Festival which “is a celebration of the local cherry industry and the beauty of the spring bloom as well as the celebration of your fitness!” All participants will receive complimentary lunch that will consist of deli sandwiches, pasta salad, chips, drinks and cherry cupcakes.

Make sure you bring those loved ones of yours and make a day of it. The Discovery Center and Museum is a great place for the rest of your family to play and hang out until you are done.
