Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland Unveils New 10K Distance

  • 6.2 mile distance welcomes beginners, runners of all abilities
  • Race returns Sun., May 18; G. Love & Special Sauce to perform at Waterfront Park

Portland, OR – Feb. 27, 2014 – Mile after mile of music and motivation at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Portland Half Marathon is an experience that invites runners and walkers of all abilities, not just those with speed and years of training. The race has announced a new 10K (6.2 mile) distance for the 3rd annual race, returning on Sunday, May 18.

“Offering a shorter distance not only allows more people to participate, but it can be the spark that changes someone’s life and finally motivates them to get to that start line,” said Alex Bennett, Event Director. “We really believe that anyone can be a part of this great experience and we want to encourage that as much as possible by providing the welcoming and encouraging atmosphere that Rock ‘n ‘Roll is known for.”

The 10K will start alongside the half marathon on Naito Parkway downtown. After running along the waterfront, the course loops back down Naito Parkway and across the Hawthorne Bridge. 10K runners will run back across the Morison Bridge towards their finish, while half marathoners will continue into East Portland, Laurelhurst Park and across the iconic Steel Bridge before returning downtown to Waterfront Park. All participants, family and friends are then invited to celebrate and relax with a performance by G. Love and Special Sauce at the finish line festival.

Local, live music is featured at every mile of the course at band stages, combining the sounds of Portland with some of its best sights. Cheerleaders join the mix, encouraging runners and offering motivation along with themed water stations and thousands of spectators.

Registration is available online at RunRocknRoll.com/Portland. The race is offering an introductory $45 price for the 10K, which is valid through midnight PST on Friday, February 28.

The Health & Fitness Expo will kickoff event weekend on Friday, May 16 at the Oregon Convention Center. The expo is free and open to the public featuring the latest health and nutrition information with a variety of products for sample and sale, as well as a series of interactive fitness clinics.
