I’ve been ‘jonesing’ to get another marathon on my race calendar, and have, and definitely will, consider the Yakima River Canyon Marathon. This marathon is a favorite for many – including some Marathon Maniacs! What makes this event just that special is the sense of community the weekend events brings upon all participants. The pre-race dinner, the bus ride to the start line … post race award ceremony with baked potato/salad bar. It all sounds so friendly and amazing, to me. This would be an excellent first marathon experience, too, as slower runners/walkers are encouraged to take the 26.2 mile challenge along with the super-fast runners. Note the course closes after 7 hours (at 3 p.m.). Early starters are allowed only with advance permission.
Here is the low-down on the race details: this is a point-to-point race, starting in Ellensburg, Washington and finishing in Selah, Washington. This means you will experience amazing views of the Yakima River Canyon. The course is a little challenging, with some elevation gain, and curves that follow the Yakima River downstream the the downhill finish in Selah. Every 2-3 miles you will see in aid station, and medical professionals and porta-potties will be available throughout the entire course. Average highs have traditionally been 55 degrees, with lows in the 30’s.
Race ‘headquarters’, which is located at the Selah Civic Center, will be the proving grounds for everything on race weekend. Friday, April 4th will be the opportunity for late-registration, packet pick-up and the pasta feed, which will include guest speakers Kathrine Switzer and Roger Robinson. No day of race registration for this event, so plan ahead and register early. Bus shuttles will run from Selah to the start in Ellensburg on race morning. You can also take the bus from Selah back to Ellensburg after the race.
Race fees are $80 until 2/28/2014. Entry fees include your race t-shirt, finisher medal, race day transportation if needed, and one ticket to the awards ceremony with meal, prize drawings and a finisher certificate.
The Yakima River Canyon Marathon sounds so awesome to me, and I am definitely going to put this on my race calendar for the future!
