Think end of January or early February in Oregon. What are the first few words that come to mind? Dreary, soaked, grey, rain, blustery or damp? That’s what I think of. Well, no fear, there’s a cure for it. Suit up in your most colorful costume, head out to Troutdale on February 1st and do the Worst Day Of The Year Run, a 5K “run, walk, race or waddle.” Think big on the costume, there will be prizes awarded for both individual and group best costumes.
Not only will the race be fun, but the thirty-six dollar registration fee packs a nice bang for the buck. Included in the price are coffee, cocoa and cider along with freshly baked bread and soup from McMenamins, where the start and finish are located. As if that weren’t enough to entice you, you will also receive a medal.
The course includes two 1.55 mile laps on packed gravel with rolling hills and views of the Columbia River. Even though the race is officially a 5K, for something different those who desire can run four laps to make it an even 10K.
Colorful costumes (no doubt to counter the grey skies) are encouraged…especially grass skirts. Hawaiian Leis will be provided for each participant.
The race will benefit the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division…one of my favorite charities. They provide food and clothing to those in need, and have been doing so since 1923.
When: February 1st, 2014
Where: McMenamins Edgefield , 2126 S.W. Halsey St. Troutdale, Oregon
